When it comes to choosing the best Medicare plan for you for the first time, it’s important to plan ahead. An individual turning 65 can begin enrolling in Medicare three months before their birthday. This is known as an Initial Enrollment Period and it includes your birthday month and ends three months after your birth month.
If you enroll during the first three months of your Initial Enrollment Period, your coverage begins on the first day of your birth month. If you delay in enrolling your coverage may be delayed.
If you miss out on enrolling during your Initial Enrollment Period and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you can enroll during the General Enrollment Period, which runs from January 1 to March 31, but you may have to pay a higher premium.
A Special Enrollment Period is usually for those people who have other coverage through an employer.
The exact timelines to enroll and the many options of Medicare plans available may be overwhelming. It’s a good idea to start a conversation with an experienced Medicare insurance broker a month or two before your enrollment period begins.
