The events of this year have caught everyone off guard. Many realized they aren’t prepared for an emergency. During Life Insurance Awareness Month in September, it’s a good time to make a plan for the worst case scenario.
Life Insurance is most often used as a safety net for your family or those who depend on you financially. After your death, those listed as beneficiaries on your policy would receive a benefit to help support them.
Even if you’re beyond the point of having children who depend on you for financial assistance, life insurance can still be useful. It can help cover funeral expenses, mortgages or any other debts you leave behind. It can also be used to leave a gift to a charity of your choice. You can name a charity as the beneficiary of the policy to leave a legacy that lasts for generations to come.
Purchasing a life insurance policy at a later age may be costly or require a medical exam. It’s a good idea to speak to an estate attorney or financial planner to determine if buying a life insurance policy may provide some tax benefit or if a current policy could be converted to better fit your circumstances.
