What is Medicare?

Medicare is a national health insurance program for Americans over the age of 65, administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. At age 65, if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you qualify for Medicare Part A which helps cover hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care and some home health care. Once you retire or are no longer working, you become eligible for Medicare Part B which covers doctor bills, outpatient care, medical supplies and preventive services. Part A and Part B are also referred to as “Original Medicare”.
