It’s open enrollment season! Whether you’re unhappy with your plan from last year, worried about what the new year holds or just enrolling in Medicare for the first time, you probably have questions. The open enrollment period ends December 7. Here are a few things to consider during the open enrollment period:
- What services do I need? Did you run into any problems with your plan last year? Did you seek a provider and realize the service you needed wasn’t included on your plan? It’s a good idea to take a moment and list out any doctors or specialists you see. Are you happy with your current doctors? Do you worry about needing to see a doctor who is outside your network? If your previous plan worked well for you—why is that? What is your priority when it comes to choosing a plan?
- What is the cost to me? When you’re looking at the cost of different plans, it’s important to consider not just the deductible but also copays and prescription drug costs. You may be drawn to a plan that allows you to see any doctor without a referral but that kind of flexibility does come at a higher cost. If you love your current doctor, make sure they are included in your network or willing to perform the service you see them for. This can change year to year.
- Does the plan have a network of providers? A network of providers, like that found in an HMO plan, can make treatment more affordable but it’s not always a good fit for everyone. If you travel often, you may want the freedom to see any doctor in any state. If you see a specialist, you may want to continue seeing that particular doctor throughout your treatment.
- What services are covered? Does your plan include dental, vision, prescription drugs and more? What services do you think you might need? Have you recently been diagnosed with a new illness that may require a new level of care?
